Statistics have shown that up to 35% of heat loss in a dwelling is through thermal bridging [see also: Thermal Bridging and Psi Values: An understanding]. Lintels are one of the single most influential contributing factors that can improve a dwellings Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) calculation and Target Fabric Energy Efficiency (TFEE) rate. By improving the lintel Psi value alone, we can significantly improve the SAP calculation, negating the need for less onerous requirements to upgrade the fabric elsewhere, which assists with achieving a value engineered building fabric.

  2. The update to Part L 2013 introduced a minimum standard for the energy required for heating and cooling of the dwelling being assessed. This Target Fabric Energy Efficiency (TFEE) is calculated based on the specific dimensions of the dwelling under consideration.   8. Standard lintels are made of a highly conductive material: steel. Thus, they contribute significantly to the buildings overall thermal bridges. The GRP component of the Hi-therm lintel means that it has much lower conductivity than steel, reducing total heat loss through lintel’s substantially. This reduced thermal conductivity means that the Psi Value applied to the calculations for this key thermal bridge may be reduced to 0.05 w/mK or lower, subsequently reducing the buildings overall massively.

  9. One-piece lintel, bonding two leafs of a building together
  10. Hi-therm is a one-piece sustainable lintel solution. The Hi-therm lintel bonds the internal and external walls together by spanning the intervening gap with a thermal break plate and contributes towards the achievement of the Target Fabric Energy Efficiency (TFEE) standards required. The Hi-therm lintel utilises a two-piece construction with a galvanised steel component supporting the inner blockwork connected to a GRP component supporting the outer brickwork.

    With split lintels you need to install two separate lintels, then install a DPC, increase the number of wall ties to stabilise the cavity and install insulation between the two separate lintels, which must be cut and measured on site and finally fit a cavity closer. All these components are an additional cost on the build. Moreover, these components are time consuming to install as well as increasing the cost of labour makes installing split lintel timely and are not often chosen by builders.
